Welcome to Exploring Extreme Environments, and Roadside Heritage traveling companion audio tours of the Eastern Sierra. As you travel on Highway 395, we invite you to discover the rich scientific heritage that is intertwined with the natural and cultural history of the Eastern Sierra Nevada, from south of Lone Pine to the California-Nevada boarder, 220 miles to the north.
Local experts, naturalists and scientists guide you on this audio journey, revealing a landscape of extremes, from sagebrush deserts to icy alpine heights. The stories will surprise you with all the amazing ways life has adapted. Human artifacts show a presence here over thousands of years of people who also found ways to thrive. Ongoing research in this region in the areas of geology, mineralogy, biology, and archaeology contribute yo our appreciation and respect for the land.
Many of the experts were interviewed for this program by youth from local communities with support from the National Science Foundation, and counties of Inyo and Mono. We hope these programs pave the way to a genuine adventure exploring extreme environments and adaptation in the Eastern Sierra..
